411 stands for the local and long distance telephone directory used in the United States. Should you wish to find a phone number you can dial 411 and an operator will search the directory of land line phone numbers. Unfortunately, this service is restricted to just land lines and is not available with cell phones.

So why is there no cell phone number 411 service?

As we understand it, there have been a few attempts at building a cell phone number 411 service. Unfortunately, to date, none have been successful.

Why? Primarily because there are so many independent cell phone providers. In order to create a "complete" 411 directory, you would need each cell phone provider to agree to releasing their numbers. Furthermore, because the number of service providers is so great incorporating all the numbers becomes a daunting obstacle.

What is preventing or discouraging each service provider from making a 411 directory of just their cell phone numbers?

It is uncertain but one theory is that cell phone carriers are concerned that if they make their numbers public and another carrier does not, the carrier may loose customers who prefer to keep there numbers anonymous.

Unfortunately, it will likely take government involvement before a true cell phone 411 service is devised.
