How to Avoid a Scam Artist

Valerie Wilson is a single mother of five children ranging in age from six months to eight years. She works two jobs in order to provide for her family and does not have much left at the end of the month. One Sunday, the one day Valerie does not have to work, she goes down to the basement of the apartment building where her apartment is located. She has go to get her laundry done today or her children will not have clean clothes to wear to school the next week. When she puts her first load into the machine and turns the knob to start it, nothing happens. She fiddles with the machine, tests the connections, makes sure the water is turned on – all to no avail.

The washing machine is broken. Valerie does not have any friends or relatives in the area who are mechanically inclined so she resorts to the newspaper to locate a handyman to take a look at the washer. She knows that she is taking a chance not using a larger more established repair company, but she hopes that a handyman will be less expensive. As she peruses the professional service advertisements in the local paper, she makes a note of several possible candidates. The one ad that really catches her eye reads "Hire Andy to be your Handyman. Top quality work. Lowest possible prices. Service today."

Andy listed a cell phone number as his only contact information. Could Valerie take the risk of paying someone she knew nothing about to fix her washing machine? She felt she had no choice and phoned Andy immediately. He came to her home and worked for several hours on the machine supposedly replacing important parts and readjusting the balancing system. When he left with Valerie’s money in his wallet and Valerie went downstairs to begin the long overdue task of starting her laundry, the machine would not work. She quickly ran up the stairs and called Andy. He didn’t answer his cell phone. She called repeatedly and never got a reply to any messages that she left.

Eventually, she took her laundry to the Laundromat down the street and began to save up for a new washer of her own. Don’t be a victim of a scam artist.
